The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands: Fall/Winter 2019

A shop window you could hear.

The activation, Fall/Winter 2019. Sound on, if you like.

Neon, on the season that is always neutral.

Fall/Winter arrives in camel, grey and black. The installation's own wall text puts the idea plainly: the neon trend taking over fashion, pushed into the products of the season that least expects it. What comes out is closer to pop-art than to a lookbook.

The house marks recur across all six (the Lioncolony ring turning on a wall, small teal bears in sunglasses watching from the floor), so a shopper crossing the pavilion saw one continuous place rather than a reel of unrelated adverts.

Lioncolony is a factory that churns out fun, sweet and addictive Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) videos with the aim to evoke happiness and help everyone reduce stress.

Built for two faces, not a feed

The films are 2500 x 2000, a 5:4 that is neither a cinema ratio nor a social one, because they were never for either. That is the shape of the screens they filled. The wall text describes works exhibited in "the rooms located on the right and left". They are shown here at that shape rather than cropped to match the rest of the site.

Each runs whole, between five and ten seconds, and each carries its own sound. Audio is off until you ask for it: six soundtracks at once is the opposite of the effect the room was built for.

Elsewhere

The showcase opened on 29 August 2019 at the Grand Colonnade, Bay Level, and ran to 17 September. Marina Bay Sands announced it as an immersive art showcase by Lioncolony and Esther Goh, describing the work as "a series of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response videos".

Coconuts Singapore later wrote about the studio and called this its most notable project, animating products for six luxury houses on the mall's LED displays.
